▏Section 1 Current Status of National Health Insurance
Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) has attracted worldwide attention for its "universality, affordability, convenience and high satisfaction." The satisfaction rate reached 90% in 2021. (Figure 8-1)
By the end of 2021, the total number of insured was 23.86 million, and the NHI coverage rate hovered around 99.96%.
The funding of NHI mainly comes from insurance premiums paid by the insured, the employers and the government. A small portion comes from external financial resources, such as Public Welfare Lottery Surpluses and Welfare Surcharge on Tobacco Products.
▏Section 2 Universal Coverage and Easy Access to Healthcare
In 2021, the total number of outpatient visits was 313.51 million; the total number of hospitalizations was 3.12 million. While the average number of outpatient visits per person per year was 13.21 (combining Western medicine, Chinese medicine and dental clinics), the number of hospitalizations per person per year was 0.13. The average length of hospital stay was 1.26 days.
