 In 2021, the ten leading causes of death accounted for 76.6% of all deaths, and were primarily chronic diseases. In descending order by mortality rate they were (1) malignant neoplasms (cancer), (2) heart diseases, (3) pneumonia, (4) cerebrovascular diseases, (5) diabetes mellitus, (6) hypertensive diseases, (7) accidents and adverse effects, (8) chronic lower respiratory diseases, (9) nephritis, nephrotic
syndrome and nephrosis, and (10) chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis. Compared to 2011, the leading causes of death that increased in ranking included pneumonia, hypertensive disease, nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis; causes that fell in ranking included cerebrovascular diseases, accidents and adverse effects, chronic lower respiratory diseases and chronic liver disease, cirrhosis. (Figure 2-6)
